Are you a middle or high school student with a passion for STEM? If so, consider applying for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge! Each year, the challenge awards $250,000 to a 13-18-year-old student who creatively and clearly explains a scientific or mathematical theory, concept, or principle in video form. The videos must be no longer than 2 minutes long and should be a dynamic visual medium, using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations, and more. The scholarship is funded by technology investors and science philanthropists Julia and Yuri Milner. Twelve percent of college admissions officers who checked Facebook decided not to admit an applicant according to a Kaplan Test Prep survey. The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand why you should be cautious about what you post on the Internet.

Each year there are 20 to 50 million tons of e-waste discarded in the world. E-waste contains toxic materials, including heavy metals, that can easily seep into the ground and ultimately get into groundwater supplies. According to the EPA, recycling e-waste allows more than 100 million pounds of materials to be reused annually. The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand the impact of e-waste and what can be done to reduce e-waste.

Scholarship Description

​Do you know how far you will drive on the freeway if you take your eyes off the road for five seconds, the average time it takes to send a text? An entire football field. According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving makes drivers 23 times more likely to get into a "safety-critical event." The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand the risks of texting while driving.

Young people spend an average of 7.5 hours a day consuming media--and this doesn't include computer use for schoolwork--according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. With technology always at the ready at your fingertips, it can be a challenge to unplug. But taking a break from technology is healthy for both the mind and body. The purpose of this scholarship is to help you understand the negative effects of too much screen time.

Scholarship Description

Lockheed Martin launched the STEM Scholarship Program in 2018 as part of investment in the next generation of STEM talent. We are committed to providing access to pathways through education and into the STEM workforce for all students, particularly those from diverse backgrounds and communities historically underrepresented in STEM fields. Each year, the STEM Scholarship Program awards $10,000 to 200 recipients studying engineering or computer science at a 4-year college or university. Recipients may renew the scholarship up to three times for a total potential value of $40,000 per student. 

Lounge Lizard Web Design Scholarship

Scholarship Description

To enter to win the scholarship, students must submit an original web design. All web design submissions must be created only by the applicant, but both past and present creations are permitted. In addition to the $1,000 award, scholarship recipients also get the opportunity to take part in a design critique session with Ken Braun,  founder and chief creative officer of Lounge Lizard. The critique can be for any project of the recipient’s choosing.   

The ASME Inspire/W.E. Clarke Scholarship

Scholarship Description

Student needs to be a graduating high school senior who intends to pursue an engineering degree or STEM-related studies. Planning to enroll full-time in an ABET- accredited* or substantially equivalent** mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology program, no later than the fall after your senior year in high school. Students need to show their involvement in STEM related activities. Demonstrate family financial need in order to go to college. This award will be for the first year of study (non-renewable) in an accredited* Mechanical Engineering program.

The ASME Auxiliary Lucy and Charles W.E. Clarke Scholarship

Scholarship Description

Student needs to be a graduating high school senior active on a FIRST FTC or FRC team. A US citizen planning to enroll full-time in an ABET-accredited* or substantially equivalent** mechanical engineering in the United States, no later than the fall after their senior year in high school. Students need to show they are active on a FIRST FTC or a FIRST FRC team. This award will be for the first year of study (non-renewable) in an accredited* Mechanical Engineering program.

STEM Stars - The Actuarial Scholars Program

Scholarship Description

The actuarial profession has a diversity challenge. Research shows dramatic disparities in career attainment for minorities. The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) estimate that only 2.7% and 1.5%, respectively, of U.S. members are Black. Latinx members only make up 1.9% and 1.8%, and Native American members are only 0.5% of the total CAS membership in the U.S. The STEM Stars Actuarial Scholars Program was created to help increase diversity in the actuarial profession.

AG Day Essay Contest

​ExploraVision is a science competition that goes beyond the typical student science competition and into what it takes to bring ideas to reality. A teacher will sponsor and lead his/her students as they work in groups of 2 – 4 to simulate real research and development. A teacher will guide his or her students as they pick a current technology, research it, envision what it might look like in 10 or more years, and describe the development steps, pros & cons, and obstacles. Past winners have envisioned technologies ranging from a hand-held food allergen detector to a new device to help people who have lost limbs regain movement in real time. 

Regeneron Science Talent Search

Regeneron STS is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science research competition for high school students. Scholarship Description

JSHS invites high school students to report on the results of their original research investigations in STEM and compete for scholarships and recognition at university-held regional symposia. Students in grades 9-12 enrolled in public, private, or home schools are eligible to participate in their local Regional Symposium. See Rules of Competition for eligibility details. There is no cost to register for or participate in a regional JSHS event.
